Leroy Sané is well underway to becoming one of the leading players in world football, according to his former youth coach, Norbert Elgert.
The Schalke under-19 coach knows Sané from the player’s time in Gelsenkirchen with Manchester City’s next Champions League opponents, and believes working with Pep Guardiola has taken the 23-year-old to a level just behind Ronaldo and Messi.
“You could see his huge potential at 16, but there are no guarantees in football,” Elgert told SPORT BILD
“He has made a big leap as a personality and footballer at Manchester City.
“He is well on his way to becoming a world leader. There are the Ronaldos, the Messis. He can already be classified as behind them.”
Elgert highlighted exactly where Sané has improved as a player under Guardiola’s tutelage.
“His positional play overall and above all in confined spaces has improved significantly. Because of this he has become more dangerous.”
And how much is Leroy worth in today’s market?
Elgert said: “Leroy is twice as expensive today [as what City paid for him]. At least €100 million.”
Sané is in the City squad to face Schalke tonight and will be hoping for a start to show his former club just how far he has come as a player.
