Schalke are expected to be without three holding midfield options for their Champions League Round of 16 tie with Manchester City on Wednesday.
Former Tottenham man, Nabil Bentaleb, and versatile defensive player Benjamin Stambouli are both injured and expected to miss the game, according to BILD. Bentaleb could play with painkillers, but ‘it makes little sense’ and isn’t expected, according to the German publication.
And 26-year-old Omar Mascarell is suspended having picked up three yellow cards in the group stage for the Gelsenkirchen club.
That means coach Domenico Tedesco is likely to field €16.5 million signing Sebastian Rudy only eleven days after a humiliating substitution when he hauled the player off after just 33 minutes against his former club Bayern Munich.
Rudy, who was actually linked with a shock loan move to City in January, has been a massive disappointment since his move to Schalke, but Tedesco is almost certainly going to be forced to call on him against Manchester City if his injured stars are missing.
