Pep Guardiola had hoped to keep Douglas around this season as back-up to Fernandinho, but when the Home Office denied the former Vasco player a work permit, City had to send him for a second loan spell in La Liga with Girona – and today’s performance showed why Pep had an interest in him.
Another of City’s highly-rated young players, Aleix Garcia, replaced Pere Pons at half-time when Girona were trailing 1-0, and helped the team pull off a big comeback to win 2-1, despite a glaring miss in front of goal from the Spain under-21 international.
Meanwhile, City’s third on-loan player at the Estadi Montilivi, Patrick Roberts, was an unused substitute having just returned from a two-and-a-half month injury.
The win moved Girona up to 15th, a much needed victory with the Catalan club hovering dangerously close to the La Liga relegation zone.
