Manchester City duo return to training on Sunday after injury problems

Manchester City welcomed back two central defenders to training on Sunday, with club captain Vincent Kompany and forgotten man Eliaquim Mangala involved in the session.

Kompany, 32, has been missing since he played in the 2-1 win over Liverpool early in January, while Mangala hasn’t kicked a ball at senior level since he was injured on loan at Everton a year ago.

The return of Kompany will give Pep Guardiola another option at centre-back with the fixtures coming thick and fast. Next up for City is the Champions League Round of 16 first leg against Schalke in Germany, with Kompany eligible to play but Mangala, who is out of contract in June, removed from the Champions League squad.

Benjamin Mendy continues to be absent from training as he continues to struggle with a knee problem, but should make his return soon.

Meanwhile, England youth international Ian Carlo Poveda again trained with the first team on Sunday, and it looks like he may have replaced the recently departed Brahim Diaz as Guardiola’s young winger option in the squad.

Pep handed Poveda, 19, his full debut in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Burton Albion in January, with big things expected of the youngster, who is also eligible to represent Colombia.
