Manchester City topped Group F of the Champions League this season but failed to beat Lyon in either game against the Ligue 1 side.
Two of Lyon’s most impressive performers were midfielders linked with City, Tanguy Ndombele and Houssem Aouar, with Guardiola in particular praising 20-year-old Aouar.
“Houssem Aouar is a very good player, he is incredible,” Guardiola said after City’s 2-2 draw with Lyon in France.
“We talk a lot about Ndombele, but Aouar is also excellent. He’s always very calm with the ball at his feet, with an excellent technical quality.”
City were then reported to have stepped in their interest in the player ahead of a potential move in the summer – although he is just one of many midfielders to have been linked with an Etihad switch.
Former Lyon star Samuel Umtiti, who now plays for Barcelona, isn’t surprised by Guardiola’s interest in Aouar and commented on it during a Facebook Live session.
“[Houssem] Aouar? He’s a smart player, technical, has good quality passing and a vision of the game. So it’s normal that a coach like Pep Guardiola is interested in this kind of player.”
It may only be a matter of time before Pep makes a move for Aouar, although he could face competition with interest growing in the talented young midfielder.
However, the player’s own comments in December suggest he’d favour a link-up with Pep.
“Yes, for me he [Pep Guardiola] is a fascinating coach of conviction, motivation. He’s a coach who does what he wants,” Aouar told RMC Sport.
“We have a common way of seeing football. I share his view and the way his teams play. It’d be nice to be coached by a manager like him.”
