Aymeric Laporte has proven himself to be an almost perfect defender for Pep Guardiola’s style of football since joining Manchester City from Athletic Bilbao in January 2018 for a then club record fee.

The 24-year-old has been in superb form this season, not only in his natural role as a centre-back, but also when called upon to play as a left-back, as he was against Liverpool, Arsenal and Everton.

Besides his physical and defensive attributes, Laporte’s technique stands out, just like it does for his regular partner at the back, John Stones.

Few defenders in world football are more comfortable with the ball at their feet than Laporte, and a stat revealed by L’Equipe highlights that.

In Europe’s top five leagues, no player has had more touches of the ball than Aymeric Laporte!

Laporte is narrowly ahead of former City target Jorginho on a list dominated by Premier League players, showing that English football is no longer a ‘kick-and-rush’ game.

Fernandinho also makes the top ten, as do a score of Chelsea players who the Blues will come up against this weekend at the Etihad.
