Ilkay Gundogan is out of contract in June 2020 and that has naturally raised some questions about his Manchester City future with the recent trend at the club being to ensure senior stars are tied down to long-term deals.
It was reported by Sun Sport on Thursday that the Germany midfielder is uncertain about his future – whether to stay in England or return to the Bundesliga, with former club Borussia Dortmund said to be interested.
German newspaper BILD has chimed in today completely contradicting the English report. Their information is that Gundogan is NOT considering a Manchester City exit right now, despite his contract starting to tick down.
On the contrary, they report that Ilkay doesn’t want to put pressure on City and is against the idea of forcing contract talks when there is still plenty of time left on a deal – in his case just under one-and-a-half seasons.
Gundogan, who has been in excellent form of late, is said to be happy in England and City want to extend his stay by giving him a new contract. And while Gundogan is in no rush to do that, the word from Germany is that he has no desire to quit the club and a contract extension may just be a formality when the time is right.
