Manchester City are concerned about Ederson after the goalkeeper suffered an injury to his leg in the shock defeat to Newcastle on Tuesday night, the Telegraph reports.
The 25-year-old was in clear discomfort with what is thought to be a gash or cut to a leg, and Pep Guardiola considered taking him off, with young back-up goalkeeper Aro Muric preparing to make an appearance.
Eventually, it was decided to keep Ederson on to face Matt Ritchie’s penalty, which he couldn’t keep out, and the Brazilian international soldiered on until the full-time whistle.
City are still said to be concerned about Ederson but with big games coming up, firstly Arsenal this weekend, he may have to play on due to the goalkeeping cover at City.
Claudio Bravo remains sidelined with a long-term injury, meaning Aro Muric is the only option and while he has played in the Carabao Cup, big Premier League matches would be a bit step up for the Kosovo international – particularly with Arsenal, Everton and Chelsea coming up.
City have signed Zack Steffen, the USA number one, but he won’t arrive until July, so the likelihood is that Ederson will have to play through the pain barrier if his leg injury doesn’t clear up.
The Blues host Arsenal this weekend and were handed a lifeline last night when Leicester held Liverpool to a 1-1 draw at Anfield, meaning the gap is 5 points rather than the 7 points City fans had feared would be the case after City slumped to a 2-1 defeat against Newcastle.
