Memphis Depay’s stint at Manchester United was a resounding failure, but the Dutch winger has progressed since joining Ligue 1 side Lyon, as Manchester City found out when they struggled against OL in the Champions League this season.
And while he is happy at Lyon, where he has 6 goals and 12 assists across Ligue 1 and the Champions League this term, the 24-year-old is dreaming of a move to a top European club – and has name-dropped Manchester City, not Manchester United, as one of those.
Memphis spoke to Helden Magazine and expressed his interest on a big move in the summer.
“Lyon is a big club, but not one of the five best in Europe,” said Memphis, who is contracted to OL until 2021.
“I want to go to a club like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea, Manchester City, PSG or Bayern. I want to go to a city that suits me, to a team that really wants to play football.
“I always talk about Real Madrid, a royal club – white shirts with gold – but I’m focusing on Lyon right now and seeing where I end up.”
Manchester United fans might see the mention of City and not them as a pot-shot at his former club, but Memphis would certainly have a point to prove were he to return to the Premier League.
Despite that, City are well stocked on wingers, with Leroy Sané, Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez occupying roles on the flank, and Bernardo Silva also capable of playing there, so a move for Memphis or any other high-profile winger seems unlikely this coming summer.
