Manchester City have rejected an opening bid from upcoming Champions League opponents Schalke for in-demand young winger Rabbi Matondo, BILD reports.
The 18-year-old Wales international is being linked with a host of Bundesliga clubs, with Bayern Munich, Borussia Monchengladbach and RB Leipzig all said to be interested, but it is Schalke who have made the first concrete approach.
Talks between the player and Schalke are said to have gone very well, but City have found Schalke’s initial offer unacceptable and turned it down. It remains to be seen if the Gelsenkirchen club make an improved offer for Matondo.
It is thought that if City become resigned to losing highly-rated Matondo, who is said to be the fastest player at the club, they will seek around £10 million for him.
Matondo is out of contract in June 2020 and has so far rejected new contract offers from City. In addition to heavy interest from Germany, Premier League pair Everton and Southampton are also interested.
