Manchester City have been boosted by the return of Benjamin Mendy after over two months out of action, with Pep Guardiola confirming that the French left-back is in the squad to face Burton Albion tomorrow.
Mendy hinted last Thursday that he could return this week and he is expected to be on the bench tomorrow night as City take on Burton in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final, going into the game with a 9-0 advantage.
“Benjamin is in the squad, he will travel with us,” Guardiola revealed at his press conference. “Maybe on the bench. The results say (we haven’t missed him) too much in the last two years but I miss him a lot.
“I have a feeling he can give us something extra and hopefully in the last part of the season we can use him. He pushes from outside and is unstoppable. In the last third he’s so clever.
“He’s played very few and all the talk, training practice, he’s not there. He will need time to adjust to what we need with his quality.”
Guardiola confirmed that Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden will start, as well as two or three other youngsters, with several more on the bench. There will be rests for many of the regulars.
“The guys who have a lot of games in their legs are going to rest (tomorrow night).
“Players who need to play, who haven’t played lately, or have come back from injury are going to play.”
City will be without skipper Vincent Kompany however, who is still having some fitness issues and isn’t ready to return yet.
Pep said: “Vincent Kompany is not okay. A few little injuries. Not fit. He is coming back but I don’t know when.”
Despite being fit, Eliaquim Mangala will play no part tomorrow Pep confirmed, suggesting that a transfer out of the club could still be a possibility for the centre-back this month.
