Paul Tierney will take charge of his third Manchester City game this season when the Premier League champions visit Newcastle a week on Tuesday.
City have a chance to crank up the pressure on Liverpool if they win, with Jurgen Klopp’s men playing a day later. That means City would be just a point behind the league leaders if they are victorious against Newcastle.
In Tierney, City have a referee with recent history of being in charge of Blues away days – his previous two appointments both coming when City were on the road.
On December 4, he had the whistle as City overcame Watford 2-1 then later that month, on December 30, Tierney was the referee for City’s 3-0 win away at Southampton.
It’ll also be Tierney’s third Newcastle assignment of the season – his previous two both being home games and both being losses (to Chelsea and West Ham).
