There are widespread reports across Europe that French giants Paris Saint-Germain have won the race to sign Frenkie de Jong from Ajax, fending off competition from Manchester City and Barcelona.
Most of the reports come from Catalonia, meaning the information is more than likely being leaked out of Barcelona, who believe the talented 21-year-old broke a verbal agreement to join them.
While PSG are now the overwhelming favourites to sign midfielder De Jong, one journalist who has been on top of this transfer saga has slightly encouraging information for Man City fans.
Speaking on Club de la Mitjanit, Oriol Domènech has agreed with the consensus that Barcelona are out of the race, with De Jong not feeling that their interest was strong enough and thus ruling them out as an option.
However, Domènech also said: “Despite everyone saying he is going to PSG, Manchester City remain calm and optimistic.”
🔥 DE JONG, NO AL BARÇA 🎙️ @orioldomenech:

Domènech’s comment suggests that City are still quietly hopeful that De Jong could arrive at the Etihad Stadium, which after recent reports would be a big surprise.
De Jong’s decision is expected to be announced soon, at which point we will know once and for all who has won the race for the in-demand Ajax star.
