Girona FC tonight made history as they overcame Atletico Madrid over two legs to reach Spain’s Copa del Rey quarter-finals for the first time ever.
The City Football Group club were heavy underdogs going into the second leg, having drawn the first 2-2 at home. Diego Simeone’s Atleti are formidable opposition on at the Wanda Metropolitano, but Girona pulled off a 3-3 draw to advance on away goals.

And two of Manchester City’s three talented loanees at the Catalan club played the whole 90 minutes, with midfielders Aleix Garcia, 21, and Douglas Luiz, 20, both playing a big part in Girona’s history-making success.
City’s third on-loan player at Girona, Patrick Roberts, has been sidelined for a while with injury but had been in excellent form prior to his unfortunate setback.
For Aleix and Douglas, games like this mean huge experience and will only improve their chances of making it at the Etihad, where Pep Guardiola is short on midfielders of their style.
Guardiola had wanted Douglas to stay at City this season as a Fernandinho back-up, but the young Brazilian was denied a work permit by the Home Office, much to Pep’s bemusement.
