First-time referee appointed for Manchester City vs. Rotherham (FA Cup) (6/1/2019)

Manchester City will have a first-time referee at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday when they host Championship strugglers Rotherham in the FA Cup third round.

David Coote has been assigned the game, his first ever fixture involving City. The Nottinghamshire-born referee rotates between Premier League and Championship games and has been working his way up the league system in recent years.

Coote does have a recent Rotherham assignment to his name, having been in charge when they won their League One tie away at Rochdale in October 2017.

Lee Mason will be the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for the match.

Paul Warne’s Rotherham side are in dreadful form as the FA Cup tie with City approaches, having lost three on the bounce and not won any of their last nine fixtures.

The Millers have dropped into the Championship relegation zone and it remains to be seen if Rotherham prioritise the tie with City or focus on survival in England’s second tier.
