Leroy Sané’s return to former club Schalke is already making headlines following today’s Champions League draw, which saw Manchester City get the Bundesliga club in the Champions League last 16.
A reunion that will get less attention is the return of Matija Nastasic to the Etihad Stadium after he spent three seasons on City’s books from 2012 until 2015, before joining Schalke.
Nastasic was a revelation in his first season under Roberto Mancini but injuries and other factors led to him not quite fulfilling early expectations before he joined Schalke for an estimated €12 million.
Asked about Schalke’s draw against his former side, 25-year-old Nastasic said they will be two ‘very special’ matches for him.
“I’m pleased we have drawn City,” Nastasic said. “These will be two very special matches for me as I played for the Citizens before signing for Schalke.
“Consequently, I’ll get to meet a few familiar faces. We know how strong our opponents are but we will give it our best shot.”
Nastasic made a total of 51 appearances for City before his move to Schalke and will surely get a warm reaction from the respectful City fans when he steps foot in the Etihad again.
