Manchester City to play Schalke 04 in Champions League Round of 16

Manchester City will play Schalke in the Champions League Round of 16 after the draw was made this morning in Nyon, Switzerland.

City’s two-legged tie against the Gelsenkirchen club was the first out of the pot and means a return home for Leroy Sané, who joined City from Schalke in 2016.

Ilkay Gundogan was also born in Gelsenkirchen so it will also be a sentimental draw for the German international.

In another reunion, 25-year-old Matija Nastasic, a key part of the Schalke side, will return to the Etihad Stadium where he played for City from 2012 until 2015.

The teams have met three times before, including twice in the UEFA European Cup Winners Cup back in 1970, with Schalke winning the first leg 1-0 before City demolished their German opposition 5-0 at Maine Road.

More recently, goals from Benjani and Stephen Ireland gave City a 2-0 win over the Bundesliga club in the UEFA Cup in 2008.

City will be away for the first leg on Wednesday 20 February, before hosting their German opponents at the Etihad on Tuesday 12 March.

The Champions League last 16 draw in full:

– Liverpool vs. Bayern Munich
– Ajax vs. Real Madrid
– Roma vs. Porto
– Lyon vs. Barcelona
– Spurs vs. Borussia Dortmund
– Manchester United vs. PSG
– Atlético Madrid vs. Juventus
– Schalke vs. Manchester City
