Manchester City’s Eliaquim Mangala injured after 8 minutes as comeback continues

Eliaquim Mangala lasted just 8 minutes before he had to be withdrawn while representing Manchester City’s under-23 side on Saturday.

The 27-year-old started for Manchester City’s Elite Development Squad against Tottenham under-23s in their Premier League 2 clash, but early in the game picked up a knock and had to be replaced by Taylor Harwood-Bellis.

It isn’t clear if the problem is serious or if his withdrawal was precautionary, but it will slow down Mangala’s full return to action.

The former FC Porto star has played 45 minutes for the EDS against Blackburn and Leicester recently, with the club carefully handling his comeback from a serious injury.

It is 10 months since Mangala featured at the top level, with a loan move to Everton cut short after just two matches. The centre-back was forced off injured against Crystal Palace with what was reported to be a knee ligament injury.

Mangala has been linked with moves to Italian giants Inter and, more recently, Turkish side Galatasaray, who Manchester City are reported to be forming a partnership with.

The Frenchman’s contract is up in June and after a disappointing spell at the Etihad Stadium, he is expected to leave on a free transfer.
