From Spain: Manchester City offer makes midfielder ‘hesitate’, but he is ‘approaching’ Barcelona

The most in-demand young midfielder on the continent, Frenkie de Jong, is getting closer to joining Barcelona, Catalan newspaper SPORT claims today.

The latest story about the 21-year-old points to him joining Barcelona, after last week it was claimed he had chosen Paris Saint-Germain – which has since been refuted.

Today, the information from Catalonia is that De Jong is very likely to join Barcelona, with the player convinced that he must head to the Camp Nou to continue progressing as a player.

Many have come knocking at Ajax’s door for Frenkie, with Manchester City and PSG presenting the biggest threat to Barcelona’s hopes of signing the Dutch international.

City’s proposal in particular is said to have made De Jong ‘hesitate’, as he was very attracted by Pep Guardiola’s project in Manchester, however it is claimed by SPORT that he does not see his football in the Premier League.

The offer of PSG was financially ‘dizzying’, but De Jong will prioritise his sporting ambitions and is said to dream of playing alongside Lionel Messi for Barça.

It should be noted that SPORT is a very Barcelona-leaning newspaper so could be biased in their reporting, and after recent twists and turns in the Frenkie de Jong saga, it would come as no surprise if there are more stories before the gifted Dutchman decides his next club.
