Manchester City will have a first-time referee on Wednesday night when they face Hoffenheim in their last Champions League Group F game.
33-year-old Swedish official Andreas Ekberg has been tasked with officiating the game between the English and German sides, his first ever appointment in a Champions League game proper after taking charge of several qualifiers.
The Swede has plenty of experience in the Europa League and was referee for last season’s UEFA Youth League final, which saw Barcelona triumph over Chelsea.
This will be his first appointment for either Manchester City or Hoffenheim as UEFA ease him into the big time with a fairly ‘dead rubber’ match, although if Lyon beat Shakhtar, City need at least a draw to guarantee they win the group.
