David Silva says joining Manchester City was the best decision he has ever made in football – despite interest from Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona before he opted to join the Blue Revolution in 2010.
In an interview with FourFourTwo (January 2019 edition), Silva said it was City’s genuine desire to sign him that helped his decision to swap Valencia for Manchester.
“Genuinely, they were the team who wanted me the most and went the extra mile,” Silva revealed. “Other teams were interested, but [Roberto] Mancini got in contact a long time before the end of the season to see if I wanted to come here, and say I was a big part of his plans.
“When someone puts so much effort into demonstrating they want to sign you, you follow your heart. That was the best decision I’ve ever made in football.”
In the interview, El Mago also speaks of his difficulties last season going back and forth between England and Spain while his newborn son Mateo was sick and fighting for his life.
“They were the hardest months of my life. The journeys were so long. Thanks to God Mateo is doing well and growing very fast.
“But it was really hard. I owe the club, my teammates and Pep Guardiola so much. They were so supportive. The last 12 months have been so hard for me personally.”
