Pep Guardiola was enchanted by the performance of young Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar – so impressed that Manchester City have already taken steps towards signing the 20-year-old according to reports in France.
According to L’Equipe (c/o Foot Mercato), not only Guardiola, but his assistant Mikel Arteta and other members of City’s coaching staff, were so impressed by Aouar that the club has already made a move for the player.
It is claimed that leaders of Manchester City approached representatives of Aouar, a France under-21 international, just one day after City struggled to a 2-2 draw against Lyon, who have proven to be tougher competition for Pep’s men than any other side this season.
Beyond that, it isn’t known if City intend to make a definite attempt to sign the player, or if the talks are exploratory, but they may have to decide quickly with rival interest from Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea.
Last July, Aouar extended his contract at the Groupama Stadium until 2023 and a massive offer will be needed to tempt OL president Jean-Michel Aulas into a sale, particularly with Aouar’s teammate Tanguy Ndombele also on the radar of European giants – including City.
After Tuesday’s game, Guardiola focused more on Aouar than Ndombele when handing out praise.
“Houssem Aouar is a very good player, he is incredible,” Guardiola told the press post-match.
“We talk a lot about Ndombele, but Aouar is also excellent. He’s always very calm with the ball at his feet, with an excellent technical quality.”
