Manchester City and Barcelona seem to show interest in many of the same players – perhaps not surprising given their styles of football – and the two could rival each other for of Portugal’s emerging young players.
City and Barcelona, along with Real Betis and Sporting CP, are clubs tracking Portugal under-21 midfielder Stephen Eustaquio, according to the Daily Mail.
Eustaquio, 21, plays for Chaves in Portugal and is understood to have a £13.3 million release clause, a very reasonable sum for a player of his talent. Sporting have made the opening offer, but City, Barcelona or Betis could yet come in with a rival offer.
The youngster was born in Canada to Portuguese parents and has chosen to represent Portugal at youth level, while impressing in his 12 appearances for his club Chaves this season.
Eustaquio has been compared to a Manchester City star, David Silva, although he compares himself more to Sergio Busquets due to his talent in the ‘No. 6’ role.
“I think there is no smarter player in the field than Sergio Busquets, so I look at him when I occupy the position of No. 6, half defensive,” Eustaquio said.
