A draw against Lyon on Tuesday night would secure first place in Group F for Manchester City, but a defeat would add some stress to City’s final match against Hoffenheim as it’d put the French side back on top by way of the head to head rule.
City need a positive performance – unlike the one in the reverse fixture – when they take on the Ligue 1 side on Tuesday, but a referee the Blues have never won under has been given the game.
Gianluca Rocchi of Italy has been appointed referee for Lyon vs. Manchester City and you can probably expect plenty of yellow cards and possibly even a red handed out by the strict Serie A official.
Rocchi has had the whistle for three of the Blues’ previous Champions League games, firstly the 1-1 draw with Real Madrid in 2012 where he actually helped City out with a generous penalty that Sergio Aguero converted, but which was not enough to see City into the Round of 16.
A few years later, Rocchi oversaw Barcelona’s 1-0 win over City at Camp Nou in which he AGAIN gave City a penalty, only for Kun Aguero to miss it this time, and City went out 3-1 on aggregate in the Round of 16.
Most recently, Rocchi officiated yet another Champions League exit for City as they were beaten 3-1 by Monaco in 2017, giving the French team an away goals win on aggregate.
Let’s hope for a less depressing result on Tuesday night when Gianluca Rocchi is in charge!
