Manchester City hope to secure the signing of Frenkie de Jong from Ajax in what would likely be a club record transfer, but a deal is not yet definite particularly with conflicting reports of how involved Barcelona are – with Sam Lee of Goal reporting that they are about to give up and Gianluca Di Marzio of Sky Italia claiming that they are the most persistent of the two clubs.
If City fail to land De Jong, they will have alternatives in mind, and Portuguese newspaper Record has a list of what it claims are Pep Guardiola’s seven alternatives to De Jong.
The list makes sense in that almost all of the players on it have been linked with a move to the Etihad Stadium at some point in the last year, with Record’s focus being on Wolves’ midfielder Ruben Neves, given that he is a Portuguese international.
According to Record, Guardiola’s list of seven alternatives to Frenkie de Jong is:
– Rúben Neves (Wolves)
– Tanguy N’Dombélé (Lyon)
– Adrien Rabiot (PSG)
– Julian Weigl (Borussia Dortmund)
– Declan Rice (West Ham)
– Boubakary Soumaré (Lille)
– Mario Lemina (Southampton)
They are players with different characteristics and features, with the main thing in common being that they can play the ‘No. 6’ role currently monopolised by Fernandinho, and all of the players are young in age.
Frenkie de Jong remains City’s priority to reinforce the midfield, but they won’t be without alternatives should Barcelona or anyone else win the battle for the Dutchman’s signature.
