Manchester City have reportedly ‘blown the competition out of the water’ and are on the verge of signing midfield sensation Frenkie de Jong in a £61 million deal from Ajax.
The 21-year-old Dutch international has been strongly linked with a move to Pep Guardiola’s City with Barcelona presenting fierce competition, but Steve Bates of the Sunday People claims that City almost have their man.
It is reported that Barcelona and Tottenham, two of De Jong’s suitors, have conceded that the babyfaced Dutch international is heading to the Etihad Stadium. De Jong would arrive in the summer even if the outline of the deal was done beforehand.
Supposing City do get a deal over the line – after last summer’s Jorginho saga, nothing is for sure – Guardiola would finally have his long-term successor to Fernandinho, who turns 34 in May.
De Jong has won praise for his creative and accurate passing ability, along with his mobility which should make him a good fit for City and the Premier League if he does choose Manchester over other options.
