He was Manchester City’s main midfield target in the January transfer window, but after no deal materialised, Brazilian midfielder Fred ended up across town at Manchester United in the summer.
The 25-year-old, who impressed for Shakhtar Donetsk last season, completed a £52 million move to Old Trafford in the last transfer window, leaving many City fans disappointed. The disappointment doubled when the player City prioritised over him, Jorginho, ended up at Chelsea – but on evidence so far this season, the Blues are doing fine without either.
And missing out on Fred, who has failed to impress so far at Manchester United, may be a case of bullet dodged.
The player has himself revealed in an interview with the FourFourTwo magazine that he had an offer from City, but nothing came of it and he wound up in the red side of Manchester.
“That’s true, I received an offer from them [City] and even talked to my Brazilian team-mates who play for our neighbours,” Fred said.
“They were trying to convince me to join them, but in the end it didn’t happen. Then it was the summer and, as I said, there were other offers, including from United. I quickly decided that was the right move for me.”
Fred may yet come good for Manchester United but so far he hasn’t looked a £52 million player in the Premier League and not many City fans are rueing the club’s failure to sign him.
