Manchester City host Shakhtar Donetsk at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday hoping for a repeat performance and result to that last month when the Premier League champions were victorious in the Ukraine.
City are top of Group F in the Champions League after bouncing back from an opening week shock defeat to Lyon with a narrow win over Hoffenheim then a thoroughly convincing win over Shakhtar. Heading into Wednesday’s game against Shakhtar, the Blues are a point ahead of Lyon and in a good position to qualify.
Paulo Fonseca’s side geared up for their trip to Manchester in the perfect way, the league leaders beating second placed Dynamo Kyiv 2-1 yesterday, thanks to a 96th minute goal by Viktor Kovalenko.
Fonseca was asked about City and the midweek game following the win and, not for the first time, was complimentary about Pep Guardiola’s team.
“This game will be a real test for us,” said Fonseca. “We know that it’ll be difficult. We all know about the quality of City and, in my opinion, they are the best club in the world, but we have conditions to win.”
Shakhtar have been further boosted by the return to action of Brazilians Taison and Dentinho, who both featured on Saturday after missing the reverse fixture against City.
