Barcelona believe Manchester City have made a €70 million (£61.8 million) bid for Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong, according to Catalan newspaper SPORT.
De Jong is widely reported to be City’s number one midfield target either for January, or perhaps more realistically, next summer, and there are rumours that Ajax chief Marc Overmars has received a ‘mystery €70m offer’ from an unnamed club.
And in Barcelona they seem convinced that the offer has come from Manchester City’s sporting director Txiki Begiristain and believe Txiki and chief executive Ferran Soriano are ‘moving fast’ to sign the in-demand 21-year-old.
At the Camp Nou however, they are said to be relaxed and still confident that De Jong will eventually join Barcelona for the experience of playing alongside Lionel Messi for a few years.
The feeling at Barça is that what City can offer Ajax and what the player wants may be two different things and are convinced that De Jong, under contract until 2022 at Ajax, is in no hurry to leave Amsterdam.
De Jong is also attracting interest from Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United, Tottenham and other clubs, but it may be a straight shoot-out between City and Barcelona for him next summer.
