Manchester City are one of a quartet of prominent European clubs showing interest in highly-rated Boca Juniors sensation Agustin Almendra, Italian outlet Sportmediaset reports.
Almendra, 18, is receiving much hype in his homeland of Argentina with some believing he could be the new Juan Román Riquelme, the legendary 51-cap Argentine international.
Boca midfielder Almendra is an Argentine international himself, but at youth level, and has broken into Boca’s first team, making five Primera División appearances so far this season, the latest against Club Atlético Rosario Central last weekend.
Along with City, Barcelona, Inter and Roma are listed as interested parties with scouts watching Almendra, and it may just be a matter of time before a European clubs snaps him up.
In a profile of the player, Sportmediaset say ‘the basic technique is there, the personality also, and he can still improve enormously at his age.’
The last midfielder City imported from Argentina was Bruno Zuculini, who failed to live up to his potential, having loan spells at Valencia, Córdoba, Middlesbrough, AEK Athens, Rayo Vallecano and Hellas Verona before moving permanently to Verona. He has since returned to Argentina with River Plate.
