Goals from David Silva, Aymeric Laporte and Bernardo Silva meant City came out 3-0 winners and even that score line flattered the Ukrainian champions, who had never previously lost to English opposition in a home game.
Over in Ukraine, the media has been covering the win with Sport-Express v Ukrainye’s headline reading ‘No Chance’.
The content of the story said it had been a reality check for Paulo Fonseca’s side, saying: “After pleasure cruises in most domestic games, Shakhtar finally felt the force of real football, playing against a fully motivated, top-class team. And they got crushed.”
Another outlet, Segodnya, believes that had Taison and Marlos, considered to be Shakhtar’s two best players, been fit, the outcome may have been different.
“The absences of Taison and Marlos was evident then, as they are the players who can make a difference in those moments,” were the words written in Segodnya.
Gazeta po-Ukrayinsky disagreed, stating: “Even with Marlos and Taison, Shakhtar would not have had a chance. The gulf in class between these teams is too big. Each Shakhtar player was second best to his City counterpart. Only a miracle could have saved the Donetsk side, but it never happened.”
Marlos should be back for Shakhtar when they visit the Etihad Stadium in two weeks time, but Taison could also miss that game after sustaining a nasty injury earlier in October.
