Paulo Fonseca confirmed yesterday that his Shakhtar Donetsk side will be without Brazilian-born duo Taison and Marlos for tonight’s game against Manchester City in Group F of the Champions League.
According to UEFA’s Shakhtar reporter Bogdan Buga, “by local reckoning [it] means Shakhtar are without their two best players” and added his own opinion: “I can barely explain how huge this loss is for Shakhtar; it’s like Barcelona losing Messi and then another Messi.”
And it could get worse for the Ukrainian giants, with Fonseca also casting doubt on whether left-back Ismaily, another one born in Brazil, will be fit to play.
“Yes, he [Ismaily] is doubtful,” confirmed Fonseca. “It’s been such a tough time for us that even my assistant got injured.”
Ismaily scored Shakhtar’s second goal in their 2-1 win over City last year during the Champions League group stage and would be another big miss for Fonseca’s side, who are hoping to follow up on a 2-2 draw away at Lyon with another positive result against the Premier League giants.
