Shakhtar Donetsk will be hoping to beat Manchester City on home soil for the second year running, but if they are to achieve that it’ll be without two of their star players.
During his pre-match press conference on Tuesday, Shakhtar coach Paulo Fonseca confirmed that he will be without Taison and Marlos for the visit of City tomorrow night.
Taison’s absence comes as no surprise after he was ruled out earlier in October after suffering an injury via a horror challenge from Zorya’s Igor Kharatin.
The injury to Marlos, who switched allegiances from Brazil to Ukraine in 2017, is a new one however, and he is expected to be sidelined for two games.
Fonseca explained: “Taison got injured in the match against Zorya and dropped out for at least six weeks. Marlos has got an injury after the meeting with Desna. I’m sure that he will miss the next two games.”
The Portuguese coach also believes his team will be facing a stronger Man City than last year.
“They are even better, they have some new players and are stronger now while we are a different team,” he said.
“We will need to pay attention to all the players in the City team. They are very strong players and any of them can give us problems.
“We know it is going to be difficult and we will probably have to suffer a bit without the ball, but we will try to find ways to play our game and attack.”
As of this afternoon, only 2,000 tickets remained unsold at Shakhtar’s 40,000-seater, and a hostile atmosphere awaits the champions of England tomorrow.
