Ajax central defender Matthijs de Ligt is subject to interest from both Manchester City and Barcelona and was put on the spot after his brilliant display for Holland against Germany on Saturday night when asked which club he would prefer to join.
The 19 year old is considered one of the finest teenager centre-backs to emerge in Europe in a number of years and a bidding war is expected for him with Barcelona and City at the front of the queue.
When asked which club he would rather join, De Ligt gave a clever answer, saying: “Ajax! The newspapers need to write something, it’s normal (the stories).”
Asked which place he’d prefer to go on holiday he gave an obvious answer leaving fans of both clubs to guess if that could influence his decision in future.
“If I were to pick a holiday destination, where would it be; Manchester or Barcelona? I think that’s clear. The place where the temperature is better,” he said.
City and Barcelona are also reported to be in competition for another of Ajax’s young players, the midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
