Manchester City are going head to head with Barcelona in the race to sign Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong, according to Goal.
The 21-year-old is known to be a target of both clubs and Barcelona attempted to sign De Jong in the summer only to fail. The Catalan club has been favoured to sign the Ajax player but now it is reported that senior sources at Barcelona believe City are in pole position.
City’s director of football Txiki Begiristain is understood to have travelled to Amsterdam for talks on several occasions and the Premier League club is now well positioned to sign the Dutch international.
Barcelona know they could not match City’s financial muscle and can only hope the pull of playing alongside Lionel Messi can help them sign De Jong.
City are in need of a central midfielder after losing Jorginho to Chelsea in the summer and De Jong now seems to be a leading candidate for the position.
The two clubs could go head to head for another of Ajax’s young guns with both interested in signing central defender Matthijs De Ligt.
