Liverpool could be without midfielder Naby Keita this weekend when Manchester City visit Anfield after the summer signing was stretchered off in the club’s 1-0 defeat to Napoli on Wednesday night.
Keita, 23, had to go off after just 19 minutes against Napoli he was replaced by Jordan Henderson. At first, it appeared to be a muscular problem for the Guinea international, but there is also a report from the respected Gianluca Di Marzio of Sky Italia that Keita was taken to hospital for a heart scan.
In an official statement, Liverpool said:
“Liverpool Football Club can confirm Naby Keita was taken to hospital in Naples on Wednesday evening during the first half of the Champions League fixture with SSC Napoli.
The midfielder started the game at the Stadio San Paolo, but was substituted inside the opening 20 minutes and replaced by Jordan Henderson after alerting the team’s medical staff to back pain.
Keita was transferred to a local hospital with the club doctor, where – with the midfielder’s agreement – he underwent a number of precautionary health checks to assess his condition.
No decision has yet been taken on when the 23-year-old will be discharged.”
Manchester City have their own midfielder concerns for the weekend after Ilkay Gundogan hobbled off against Hoffenheim on Tuesday night.
The Premier League champions, who plan to keep their bus route secret to try and avoid the ugly scenes from last season when the team bus was attacked, will travel to Anfield looking for their first win in 15 years at Liverpool’s stadium.
