City Stat: ‘Guardiolism’ on display as Manchester City top European charts in three key stats

Manchester City are top of the Premier League heading into this weekend’s crunch clash with Liverpool at Anfield, and their consistency is largely down to the philosophy Pep Guardiola has instilled at the club.

Passing, movement and chance creation are key to the City style of play, particularly as most teams sit deep and ‘park the bus’, but City continuously find ways to break them down thanks to a system and belief drilled into them by the Catalan tactician.

And the Blues are leading the way in three key stat departments this season in Europe’s top five leagues (Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, Ligue 1): Most Possession, Highest Pass Success and Shots Per Game

Not even Barcelona can boast the possession and pass success rate of Guardiola’s City. The top three for each of those categories looks like this:

Most Possession:

1. Manchester City – 67.3%
2. Barcelona – 66.2%
3. Real Betis – 64.9%

Highest Pass Success:

1. Manchester City – 90.4%
2. Real Madrid – 90.1%
3. Paris Saint-Germain – 89.1%

Shots per game:

1. Manchester City – 24
2. Juventus – 21
3. Lyon – 19.5

One category City aren’t leading the pack in is Most Goals as Paris Saint-Germain crush all before them in France’s Ligue 1, but City do rank second there.

Most Goals

1. Paris Saint-Germain – 27
2. Manchester City – 21
3. Borussia Dortmund & Marseille – 19
