Manchester City remain unbeaten domestically this season with September’s fixtures done and dusted, but suffered a Champions League defeat to Lyon this month. That was the only blemish on an otherwise fantastic month that saw wins over Newcastle, Fulham, Cardiff, Oxford United and Brighton.
There were many good performers during the month of September, so many that we’ve had to leave a couple out of our poll for the for the City Watch Player of the Month award. Here’s who we have gone with:
Aymeric Laporte – The January arrival has been sensational this season and was also nominated for August’s award, which was eventually won by Benjamin Mendy. Centre-back Laporte played 90 minutes in every game bar the Carabao Cup win over Oxford, showing excellent defensive and passing ability.
Bernardo Silva – The little playmaker is becoming more and more central to Manchester City’s team and a succession plan for him to replace David Silva, who is now able to be rested more, appears to be in place. Bernardo scored against Lyon and Cardiff, but his overall influence on games can’t quite be measured by statistics.
Raheem Sterling – The two-time winning of the City Watch Player of the Month award has shown a whole new level of maturity and intelligence this season and we can only hope his contract issues are sorted soon. Raz scored 3 goals and contributed 2 assists in a productive September, and was our Man of the Match in Saturday’s win over Brighton.
Sergio Aguero – Manchester City’s icon has looked sharper than ever this season, helped by knee surgery at the end of the last campaign that he says has made him feel fitter than ever. Sergio became creator in the wins over Newcastle and Fulham with assists, before returning to his goal scoring best with goals against Cardiff and Brighton.
We've had to leave a couple of big performers out, but here are our candidates…
