Jorginho was the source of much expectation then annoyance in the summer transfer window for Manchester City fans when he was one step away from joining the Premier League champions before Chelsea swooped and signed him up along with Maurizio Sarri from Napoli.
The Brazilian-born Italy pass master has settled in well at Chelsea, breaking passing records and adapting nicely to English football, helped by the fact he has linked up with Sarri again.
While we have often heard from his talkative agent Joao Santos, Jorginho himself has spoken for the first time about why he eventually joined Chelsea over City, in doing so effectively sacrificing a year of Champions League football with Chelsea in the Europa League this season.
“There are a lot of things behind a negotiation process,” said Jorginho. “I believe Sarri’s arrival played a big part in it.
“And there’s also the greatness of Chelsea, such a big club. So these factors helped me making my mind.”
The last comment is sure to annoy some City fans, particularly after the player’s agent said in an interview that Jorginho wanted to join City.
“Today, the certainty is that Manchester City want Jorginho and the boy wants to go there,” Joao Santos said in May.
City have yet to really feel the effects of missing out on a central midfielder in the summer, but with Fernandinho ageing there is a growing need to find a player who can play the No. 6 role, and the likes of Frenkie de Jong, Ruben Neves, Tanguy Ndombele and Thiago Alcântara are being linked with a switch to the Etihad.
