Controversial referee appointed for Manchester City vs. Brighton (29/9/2018)

The last time Lee Mason took charge of a Manchester City game he failed to hand Cardiff’s Joe Bennett a straight red card for a controversial horror tackle that injured Leroy Sané.

Bennett was eventually sent off for a second bookable offence after taking out young Brahim Diaz, but Blues and Pep Guardiola himself were not happy with Mason’s inability to protect the City players.

For the first time since that 2-0 FA Cup win over Cardiff in January, Mason will have the whistle for a Manchester City match this weekend, having been appointed referee for City’s home clash with Brighton.

Mason’s only other City appointment last season was a less controversial affair, the 3-1 home win over Watford at the Etihad Stadium on 2 January this year.

Saturday’s opposition Brighton had just the one game with 46-year-old Mason in charge last season, a 2-2 home draw against Stoke City.
