Tonight’s match between Manchester City and Lyon at the Etihad Stadium is expected to be well short of a sell out, with the lack of superstar opposition in the Champions League appearing to impact the appetite of many fans to attend the midweek group stage game.
It’s unknown how many City fans will be there, with tickets still on sale, but there is an almost exact number on how many fans will travel from Lyon to support the Ligue 1 side.
According to French newspaper L’Equipe, 600 Lyon fans – VIP included – are expected to be at the Etihad tonight, not the biggest of followings for a club that had 53,438 at their last home game against Nice.
Lyon, who have had to deal with disciplinary issue among their fans, have made supporters groups aware in the past week that they need to avoid negative attention, but are not expecting too many problems tonight.
Prior to a Europa League tie against CSKA Moscow last season, there was crowd trouble which led to UEFA charging the French club under multiple counts, including throwing of objects, setting off of fireworks, crowd disturbances, racist behaviour and blocking stairways.
