Pep Guardiola gives Sergio Aguero injury update and expresses Phil Foden ‘guilt’

Pep Guardiola suggested in his press conference after today’s 3-0 win over Fulham at the Etihad Stadium that Sergio Aguero’s injury isn’t too serious.

Aguero was taken off shortly after setting up Raheem Sterling’s goal, with Gabriel Jesus replacing him early in the second half.

Asked if it was his knee, Pep said Kun actually felt something in his ankle and no risks were taken.

“Something in the ankle,” Guardiola confirmed. “When he fell down, he felt something. He finished the first half, started the second half feeling uncomfortable. He could play, but we decided not to risk it.

“[Will he be fit for Lyon?] We will see tomorrow.”

Aguero’s problem impacted Guardiola’s plans for using his subs and meant there was no game time for teenager Phil Foden. The City boss said he felt guilty about not letting the local lad on the pitch, but promised everyone that he will get game time soon.

“I feel guilty. He [Foden] deserves to play, he doesn’t play. But we had a problem with Sergio Aguero getting injured and we didn’t want to take a risk.

“But he’s [Foden] going to play a lot of games this season. Now we start a game every three days – he’s going to play.”

Leroy Sané answered his critics quickly and decisively by opening the scoring in just 97 seconds in his return to the side, and Guardiola said he had never doubted Leroy’s quality.

“Even in the period he didn’t play, we never doubted Leroy’s quality. He showed us many times, especially last season. And today he played so good.

“He’s 22-years-old and sometimes these things [loss of form] happen at his age.”

And what about Bernardo Silva, a standout performer in today’s win? Guardiola has spoken highly of the Portuguese playmaker in the past and again spoke with glowing praise today.

“It’s almost impossible to be more pleased as a manager. That’s why he deserves to play all the minutes he’s playing. He’s a good example for us, all the guys.

“Thank you so much to Manchester City for buying him.”
