The most frustrating transfer saga of the summer for Manchester City fans was the club’s pursuit of Napoli midfielder Jorginho, which lasted for an eternity before the player eventually joined Chelsea instead.
After multiple reports of a fee being agreed, the player being ready to fly over, and other hallmarks of a ‘done deal’, many were left perplexed by how City allowed the former Napoli midfielder to slip from their grasp.
His talkative agent, Joao Santos, has revealed just how close the pass-master was to making the Etihad Stadium his new home instead of Chelsea.
“It was all done with Jorginho [to City],” Santos told Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli. “There was an agreement, but there was no agreement between the clubs. All parties have to agree, and one did not.
“Then Chelsea asked what the situation was after Sarri arrived and Jorginho went to London.”
Santos’ words suggest it was not so much the player’s decision that led him to Chelsea but a failure between City and Napoli to reach a total agreement. City ended the transfer window without signing the midfielder Pep Guardiola wanted and the search continues.
Frenkie de Jong, Ruben Neves and Tanguy Ndombele are just three midfield names currently being linked with a move to City, and only time will tell if Pep decides to move for a reinforcement in January or wait until next summer.
