It took a player who had never previously scored in 51 appearances for Manchester City to make the difference today as the Premier League champions beat Newcastle 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium.
Kyle Walker is not the most prolific goal scorer and found the net just 4 times in 229 appearances for his previous club Tottenham, but he chose a good time to get off the mark at City after a resilient Newcastle had drawn level following Raheem Sterling’s opener.
The 28-year-old hit an absolute rocket from long distance, giving Toon goalkeeper Martin Dubravka no chance. No further goals followed in what was an underwhelming performance by City, but one which they came away from with three vital points after Liverpool and Chelsea picked up wins earlier.
