Manchester City’s highly-rated midfielder Matt Smith has been called up by Wales boss Ryan Giggs for their upcoming UEFA Nations League games against Ireland and Denmark.
The 18-year-old has been dispatched to FC Twente in the second-tier of Dutch football this season for his first experience in the men’s game, and he is highly thought of at the Etihad.
Smith has already been capped by Wales after appearing as a substitute in a 0–0 friendly draw with Mexico on 28 May 2018. The latest call up could see him involved in more competitive games with Wales part of the new UEFA Nations League, a concept designed to spruce up the old friendly format.
The English-born teenager has played 90 minutes in both of Twente’s opening league games of the season against Sparta Rotterdam and Helmond Sport, and will hope a year of valuable experience abroad will nudge him closer to Pep Guardiola’s first-team squad at the Etihad Stadium.
