The Etihad Stadium will welcome back the Champions of England, Manchester City, this afternoon for their first home game of the season against Huddersfield Town. The Blues lost just once in the Premier League last season, a defeat to neighbours Manchester United that we’d rather all forget, and it will be key to a successful title defence that they continue their imperious form at the Etihad this season.
Last year’s home fixture should serve as a warning leading into today’s tie, as City were held to a 0-0 draw in the match that preceded Vincent Kompany lifting the Premier League trophy. City did manage to win the away fixture against Huddersfield last season, but it was a tough slog, with Guardiola’s men narrowly edging out David Wagner’s compact Terriers 2-1. The Blues will hope for another win today after getting their Premier League title defence off to a flying start away at Arsenal last weekend.
Despite their troubles against Huddersfield last season, City go into the game heavy favourites and you could even benefit from a bonus up to £20 at the bookies.
Pep Guardiola has opted for an interesting and different lineup today with three centre-backs – Aymeric Laporte, John Stones and club captain Vincent Kompany – named in addition to left-back Benjamin Mendy who will undoubtedly play up the pitch and deliver as many crosses as he can to break down what is sure to be a compact Huddersfield defence.
Fernandinho is the lone defensive midfielder behind an all-out attacking unit comprised of David Silva, Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva and strike duo Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus. It’s clear that Guardiola remembers last year’s struggles against Huddersfield and is looking to break down their defences as quickly as possible.
Experienced 47 year old Andre Marriner is the referee for today’s game and here are the lineups selected by Pep Guardiola and his counterpart David Wagner:
Manchester City XI: Ederson, Laporte, Stones, Kompany, Mendy, Fernandinho, D. Silva, Gundogan, B. Silva, Jesus, Aguero
Huddersfield Town XI: Hamer, Smith, Kongolo, Billing, Lowe, Pritchard, Mounie, Schindler, Stankovic, Sabiri, Hadergjonaj.
