After receiving news that Douglas Luiz has been denied a work permit to feature for his parent club this season, Manchester City must again loan the 20-year-old Brazilian out after he spent last season in Spain with Girona.
And according to Bruno Andrade of Goal, businessman Carlos Leite, who helped smooth Douglas’ £10.7million transfer to City from Vasco da Gama last year, has offered the midfielder to Portuguese giants Benfica.
Leite was in Lisbon last week and proposed Douglas to Benfica and their decision on him could be related to the future of Pizzi, the talented Portugal international who is linked with Marseille, Schalke 04 and Real Betis.
Benfica are in the Champions League third qualifying round and hold a 1-0 lead over Fenerbahce going into the second leg of that tie later today.
With the expectation that they will advance further into Europe’s leading cup competition, Benfica are looking for midfield reinforcements, and even if Pizzi doesn’t leave, are working to bring back former player Ramires, who also spent time in the Premier League with Chelsea.
For now, Douglas is only a candidate for Benfica and other clubs are sure to be interested in the Manchester City youngster, who has caught the eye of both Pep Guardiola and Brazil coach Tite. Galatasaray have been linked, while a return to Girona also can’t be ruled out.
