Manchester City are being linked with a late move for Sevilla midfielder Steven N’Zonzi, who is also subject to interest from Roma, Arsenal and Everton.
The 29-year-old was rumoured to be a target for Pep Guardiola in the January transfer window and if a team triggers his reasonable £35million release clause, Sevilla will be helpless to prevent the World Cup winner from leaving.
According to Rome-based Il Messaggero, City could pounce for N’Zonzi who would serve as cover and rotation for Fernandinho as the anchor man in City’s midfield.
N’Zonzi, who has experience in English football from his days at Blackburn and Stoke, would provide a good short to medium-term fix for the midfield, and has been a standout performer for Sevilla in La Liga over recent years.
However, Pep Guardiola said on Sky Sports yesterday that he doesn’t expect any more incomings, which would suggest this story is pure speculation – like so many rumoured targets since City failed to land Jorginho.
“I think we are not going to make any more signings,” Guardiola said on Tuesday.
And as he said on Sunday, that could lead to John Stones stepping into the midfield, an idea Pep spoke of again yesterday.
“John, for the qualities he has, I think he can play there – but I dont know, we have never tried him there.”
