Pep Guardiola confirmed that Manchester City are trying to make one more signing before the transfer window closes – and it would be a central midfielder.
Speaking after City’s comfortable win over Chelsea at Wembley, Guardiola said he would like one more player with a similar profile to step in for Fernandinho.
“I don’t know (about new signings), we are trying,” Pep told journalists. “We would like to find maybe one more because we don’t have players to substitute Fernandinho, but if he doesn’t come then we will stay as we are.
If City can’t bring in an ideal player, Pep said John Stones could play in midfield. The defender played a big role in City’s second goal at Wembley by stepping up, dispossessing a Chelsea player, and beginning the move that led to Aguero’s goal.
“If finally we can’t find another solution for somebody to play there (deep midfield) John (Stones) could play there.”
Asked if they’re close to their preferred target, Pep responded: “I don’t know. In four or five days we will know it.”
City have been linked with a host of midfielders since losing out on Jorginho to Chelsea, but have denied links to the likes of Miralem Pjanic and Mateo Kovacic. The most recent name linked has been PSG’s Marco Verratti, but that would be an incredibly complex deal to do with so little time left in the window.
