Inter could turn to Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan in their search for a midfielder with a deal for Luka Modric looking unlikely, Tuttosport claims.
The 27-year-old was linked with Inter in May and his name has resurfaced after Real Madrid president Florentino Perez said Modric could only leave the Bernabéu for his €750million release clause.
Inter, who stalled a deal for now Barcelona-bound Arturo Vidal to pursue Modric, haven’t completely given up on 32-year-old Modric yet, but with a transfer proving complicated, the Nerazzurri are considering alternatives.
And they see Gundogan as a player that fits the bill. The German is an important member of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side, but isn’t quite as irreplaceable as some of his City teammates such as Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva.
It is suggested by Tuttosport that Gundogan could be acquired for around €40million (£35.6million) and they point to the fact that his contract – due to expire in 2020 – hasn’t been extended yet as evidence that the Blues may be open to a sale.
However, unless City could bring in a big-name midfielder with a week remaining in the transfer window, Inter may be out of luck in any pursuit of Ilkay. Though Marco Verratti of PSG has been linked in the past day, the chances of a deal happening there seem remote.
And having missed out on Jorginho earlier this summer, City will certainly not even consider the sale of Gundogan if a high-level midfielder doesn’t arrive before the transfer window slams shut.
